Capaldi's stimulus specificity theory, as applied to extinction phenomena, asserts that two variables, N-length and number of preshift trials, are responsible for response decrement during extinction in animals. This study factorially manipulated these variables using humans. Data did not support Capaldi's habit generalization approach to experimental extinction.
