Union County is located in the southern part of the Piedmont of North Carolina. Its recorded history began around 1700 when John Lawson studied the Waxhaw Indians who lived in the area. After the Indians left the area, Scotch-Irish began to settle there. This was only a short time before 1750. Quickly thereafter Germans and immigrants from other parts of North Carolina and South Carolina began to arrive, bringing with them their particular religious denominations. Eventually three denominations became most popular: Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian.
