Galax urceolata is an evergreen understory herb whose leaves exhibit a dramatic change in color from green to red under high light, low temperature conditions. This color change has been attributed to anthocyanin sythesis in the outermost mesophyll cells, though its functional significance has yet to be fully investigated. In this study, four hypotheses for anthocyanin sythesis in Galax were proposed and tested.
