This three-article dissertation challenges the persistent structures of traditional education by proposing a radical departure from the “grammar of schooling.” Drawing from historical analysis, theoretical frameworks, and innovative design, the work critiques the origins and continued dominance of the common school model—rooted in 19th-century Prussian ideals of conformity and standardization—and its failure to adapt to the needs of a rapidly changing, information-driven society. The first article explores how deeply entrenched practices, masked as reform, have preserved outdated pedagogies despite numerous well-intentioned efforts. The second article introduces the ESCAPE model (Evaluation of the Structural Contrast of Alternative Pedagogy in Education), a tool for assessing traditional norms and offers designers a framework for more meaningful innovation. The third article applies the ESCAPE model to an original instructional design: Driftwood, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) conceived as a fully immersive, learner-centered alternative to conventional schooling. Through historical critique, analytical modeling, and applied design, this dissertation calls for a bold reimagining of education—one that embraces creativity, autonomy, and relevance rather than superficial improvement of an outdated system. It is both a critique and a blueprint for educational transformation.
