Recent evidence indicates that several species of fish are sensitive to chemical as well as visual cues in the maintenance of dominance heirarchies. Aggressive displaying in the Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) was studied as a function of water cues emitted either by dominant or subordinate conspecific fish.
