This thesis is a synthesis of fieldwork, research, and analysis of the music-making traditions among three uniquely talented elderly women singers: Hazel Rhymer, Pearl Hicks, and Zora Walker, who were all born in the 1920s and grew up and spent the majority of their lives in western North Carolina.
