<p dir="ltr">Doc Watson's professional career has been well documented and studied, but his life before the 1960s has received far less attention. Rather than relying purely on oral histories, the author uses his extensive research into local newspapers of northwestern North Carolina and north eastern Tennessee and gives a fuller picture of Doc's career as an amateur and semi-professional musician. First coming to New York in 1961, Doc was often presented as an inexperienced folk musician, a raw talent from the mountains of Appalachia. But evidence shows that he was 37 years old when he was "discovered" and had worked in music for a wide variety of audiences and in varying musical styles.</p>
